KCQs about C.banner International

While reading C.banner International's Annual Report, I found the following points of interest:

  • After listing with the Hong Kong Exchange, C.banner had an increase in share capital from RMB 49,271,000 in 2010 to RMB 202,087,000. However, this has plateaued and remained the same for 2011-2013. Has anyone else had a company that has moved to a different stock exchange and seen a massive increase in share capital?
  • I have seen only one news article about my company, which was actually only a small reference to their relisting on the Hong Kong Exchange within an article about another company. Are there any other companies that people have been given that have no news, articles or information available other than what is provided on their own website? I am concerned that part of the task is to find news, videos etc on our companies and I am drawing a blank.
  • My company is a footwear retailer, and they attribute their decrease in revenue during 2013 to the global economic climate. Has anyone else noticed a decrease in their company's revenue that has been attributed to the same reason? Is your company also in the fashion industry or is it a completely different industry entirely?
  • C.banner mentioned in their annual report that they closed some of their slower performing stores in 2013, their worst performing year. Has the economic position over the last few years caused anyone else's companies to decrease their operations to try to stay afloat?
I must say, when I was given this company and looked through their financial statements, I was a little concerned and overwhelmed, as the majority of it is in Chinese! Luckily it is translated but it still deals in Chinese currency, something that I have not worked with or am familiar with. A few weeks in though, I am glad that I got put a little out of my comfort zone, as it will only help me learn that little bit more. Who else has a company with a currency that you aren't used to or familiar with? How do YOU feel about working with it? Is anyone else's company's Annual Reports primarily in a different language?

  1. Hi Sarah

My company is a retail group in New Zealand with retail operations in the homewares and sporting sectors. My company has not felt any impact from the global economic climate and has show consistent increase in revenue for the last five years. However, they are fortunate to have very strong brand recognition, their sporting sector retail chains is Rebel Sports and one of their homeware chains has been operating in NZ for over 150+ years and is a household name. I believe this has helped them weather the global economic climate.

My company closed three retail stores in their underperforming homeware sector chain Living and Giving and they are continuing to evaluation the viability of this chain in the coming year. Considering they are still increasing their profit each year, the other chains must be doing really well to cover for this chain that is running a loss and having closures.

My company has also opened an online store for all three chains which has seen significant increase in sales revenue. Do you think a move online for your company would help them?

I found working with a company from overseas that I had never hear of before a little challenging at first. It seemed to take me longer to get to know them and fully understand what they do and how they operate. However, as you posited, getting out of my comfort zone was probably good for me and made me work harder at researching and understanding my company. I do not envy you having to work with a foreign language company as well, that would have created even more challenge.
